BGN  44:143 Export to PDF
Stock number: BGS 408
Locus name: Eceriferum-n
Locus symbol: cer-n

Previous nomenclature and gene symbolization:

Eceriferum-zm = cer-zm (16).
Glossy sheath 9 = gs9 (5, 6).

Inheritance:

Monofactorial recessive (7), except Cer-n.969 (12).
Located in chromosome 2HL (3, 17, 18); gsh9.al is about 8.8 cM distal from the eog1 (elongated outer glume 1) locus (1); gsh9.al is about 23.3 cM proximal from the vrs1 (six-rowed spike 1) locus (1, 5); cer-n.20 is associated with SNP markers 2_0674 to 1_1533 (positions 85.71 to 141.56 cM) in 5H bins 07 to 10 of the Bowman backcrossed-derived line BW118 (2): gsh9.al is associated with SNP markers 1_1493 to 2_0734 (positions 76.05 to 122.02 cM) in 2H bins 06 to 09 of the Bowman backcrossed-derived line BW412 (2).

Description:

Mutants appear to lack surface wax coating on the spike, and surface wax on the leaf sheath may be reduced or absent (wax codes - - ++ and - +/- ++) (7, 16). The original stock cer-n.20 has a translocation breakpoint that is closely linked to the gene (7). The agronomic and morphological attributes of the Bowman backcross-derived for cer-n.20, BW118, were similar to Bowman. However, the Bowman backcross-derived line for gsh9.ad, BW412, had variable kernel weights, slightly too much less, and grain yields that were 20 to 40% of those recorded for Bowman (4). Even though BW118 has retained donor parent DNA segments in the centromeric regions of 2H and 6H, it does not exhibit the reduced seed set frequently associated with a translocation (2, 4).

Origin of mutant:

A neutron induced mutant in Bonus (NGB 14657, PI 189763) (7).
