BGS 381, Shrunken endosperm genetic 5, seg5
Stock number: BGS 381
Locus name: Shrunken endosperm genetic 5
Locus symbol: seg5
Previous nomenclature and gene symbolization:
Shrunken endosperm = se5 (2).
Inheritance:
Monofactorial recessive (1).
Located in chromosome 7HS (1);seg5.e is probably in the centromeric region of the short arm (3).
Description:
Seed size is reduced in homozygotes with the 100-kernel weight being about 50% of normal. However, seed size is quite variable within a spike. Seed set is reduced to about 20%, probably due to seed abortion. The caryopsis frequently exceeds the lemma and palea in length. The combination of caryopsis length and reduced seed set is used to classify mutant plants (1, 3).

Origin of mutant:
A spontaneous mutant in a Sermo/7*Glacier (CIho 6976) line (1).
Mutational events:
seg5.e (GSHO 754) in a Sermo/7*Glacier line (1, 2).
Mutant used for description and seed stocks:
seg5.e (GSHO 754) in a Sermo/7*Glacier line.
